Gulin county locates in the southern margin of Sichuan Basin, northern foot of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, a region of Peninsular-shaped embedded in North Guizhou, next to BijieJinshaRenhuaiXishuiChishui five counties which belong to Guizhou Province, bordering Xuyong county to the West.

The county has an area of 3184 square kilometers, covering 26 townships, including 3 nationality townships, consists of 269 administrative villages, with a population of 870 thousand people. There lives 26 ethnic groups, such as Han, Miao, Yi, Hui and so on. It is one of the populous county which minority nationalities living in mixed communities in Sichuan Province.

In the early years, Gulin belonged to Luzhou Prefecture of Southern Sichuan District Committee; since the refounding of Sichuan Province in 1953, it belonged to Luzhou Prefecture; after the combination of Yibin Prefecture and Luzhou Prefecture in 1960, it belonged to Yibin Prefecture; after the setting-up of Luzhou city in 1985, it was divided and incorporated into Luzhou city from previously Yibin’s jurisdiction until now.

   The world-known 25000 li Long March initiated by the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army fighted 54 days in the territory of Gulin , where Chair Mao Zedong and other revolutionaries of the older generation directed the famous Cross Chi River for Four Times, having achieved a decisive victory in the strategic shift of Long March.

The four ferry crossings named TaipingduJiuxikouErlangtan Caolianxi in Gulin were important ferry crossings in the secondthirdfourth cross Chi River; BaishaYuchaHuilongchangTaipingdu were once the sites of the Red Army headquarters; the Party Central Committee and its Military Commission had issued a "red book to all the soldiers" in Baisha, which made hundreds of workers’ and peasants’ children and young students in Gulin joined the Red Army, joined the great struggle of Chinese revolution.
